Monsoon-The Band

“A Canadian Indo-Jazz Fusion group pushing the boundaries in our multi-cultural community combining the
essences of India with the modern sounds of Jazz.”

Monsoon is an Indo-Jazz ensemble that presents an eclectic blend of contemporary Jazz and Indian classical music. This group of highly accomplished musicians brings together their diverse musical backgrounds and strong musicality to create a powerful and fresh approach to world music and the blending of eastern and western music traditions.
Monsoon consists of some of Canada’s most exciting young musicians: Jonathan Kay (bansuri and saxophones), Andrew Kay (saxophones, woodwinds and percussion), Justin Gray (acoustic and electric bass), Todd Pentney (piano and keyboards), Adam Teixeira (drums and percussion), and is completed by virtuoso tabla artist and percussionist Ravi Naimpally.
Since Monsoon’s creation in 2006, the ensemble has made a large impact on the Canadian and International music scene. Monsoon has been featured in the Toronto International Jazz Festival, the Guelph Jazz Festival and Small World Music Festival. Monsoon has been a key element of the Toronto Indo-Jazz Festival, headlining for the past 3 years. Members of the group have travelled to India several times to study the ancient art form of Raga music as well as share their ideas and concepts of East-West fusion with some of India’s finest musicians.
Over the past 4 years Monsoon has featured several World-renowned guest artists including Indian classical vocalist Shantanu Bhattacharyya, sitar, dilruba & bassist George Koller, and NYC’s Trumpeter Ingrid Jensen.
Monsoon is continuing to develop their sound and is working on sharing their music to new communities around the world. Monsoon’s debut album is currently under production and plans to feature various soloists from both Canada and India, and is scheduled to be released in late 2011.
